I've been thinking for some time about mobile platforms such as smartphones being the next wave of devices for application delivery. After a brown-bag presentation on the iPhone by Scott Lewis, a multitude of thoughts invaded me and I decided that I've waited long enough and now I'm going to do something.
I co-founded the Utah Java User Group back in 1999 and it has thrived under the great leadership of several others. I figured that by now I know how to setup and run a decent user group but I'm certainly no expert on mobile development, so I called Scott and gave him the pitch. It didn't take any selling at all; Scott was ready to start a group as well.
So here we go. A few minutes later I'd obtained the Federal EIN for a non-profit and applied for the requisite state licenses (which we now have).
Our common employer, Software Technology Group (one of the very first sponsors of the UJUG in '99) immediately offered to sponsor the group and so we have some funds to get things going. There's plenty of work to do but I feel like we're off to a great start.
The website address for the dev group is www.utahmobiledev.org. There's pretty much nothing there at the moment but I expect it to grow quickly.
The mobile platform is going to bring about significant changes, and the developer group is all about getting together, educating ourselves and making things happen.
